Our green roofs: vegetalized roofs
Imagine if all this beautiful downtown area had vegetalized roofs!
Vegetalized roofs, while not very widespread, offers many advantages. They allow, as example, to lower climatisation costs, increase lifespan of roofing -as much as twice, acting as a protection membrane-, and lower pollution by filtering air and rain water.
If vegetalized roofs are more expensive that standard roofs, they allow substantial energy cost economies. In fact, if 6% of Montreal roofs were vegetalized, ambiant temperature would be lower by 1,5°C.
Two type of green roofs are available :
- Extensive culture: Light and not requiring a lot of maintenance, this type of green roof only allows for a limited selection of plants. Insulation efficiency is a bit lower than intensive culture.
- Intensive culture: This type of roof allows all kind of plants, providing a better insulation. However, intensive culture requires a lot of maintenance and a renforced roof for a safe access.
